- This year's World Championships were held in
Tullamore, Ireland, on July 31st, August 1st
and 2nd. Ten teams took to the field in the 13th
World Championships to be held. Great Britain entered as
favourites, having won the previous 12 titles, along with
Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Germany, Belgium, France,
Sweden, USA, Canada and of course Luxembourg.
- The Luxembourg team of Nicole Gibbard, Jens Martin,
Bettina Pratt, Carla Schmartz and Valy Schmartz went into the
competition on the back of some good results and confidence was
high. This was in no small part due to their trainer Peter Hern
from Great Britain. Big things were expected and a never before
achieved place in the «A» final was the aim.
- Our national team's qualifying got off to a shaky
start as nerves were definitely showing. By the end of the day
they were still in contention for the «A» final but
things were going to have to improve on day 2. They did. A
terrific fight back resulted in a final qualifying score of 122.
That left the team to sit on the sidelines and watch how the
other teams faired. At the end of the day it wasn't quite enough
as the team from Canada managed 125 points and claimed the last
place in the «A» final.
- Missing out on the «A» final by just 3
points and being relegated into the B final along with France,
Germany and Belgium left the team very deflated. Their
performance in the final did not live up to the standard they had
set throughout the qualifying rounds and they ended up well and
truly beaten. At the end of the day it was a case of so near but
yet so very, very far. It was not all bad news though, the
performances in the qualifying rounds promise a lot for the rest
of the season and beyond.
- 13 may be unlucky for some but not for the team from
Great Britain who, although they were run very close by the host
nation, claimed yet another title which left the rest of the
teams wondering whether they will ever be beaten.
